Setting up a Kid’s Investment Portfolio

Teaching your children about money is one of the most valuable gifts you can provide. In a rapidly growing economy like ours in Nairobi, understanding how capital grows is just as important as learning how to save. At KiddyCash, we provide a simulated environment where children can learn the ropes of the stock market without the risk of losing real family savings.

By starting early with investing, children develop a long-term mindset and learn to distinguish between short-term spending and long-term wealth creation.

What is a KiddyCash Investment Portfolio?

A Portfolio is simply a collection of different investments. In the KiddyCash app, this is a dedicated section within your child’s wallet where they can “buy” and “sell” shares of real-world companies using their KES balance.

Note: This is a simulated environment. While the stock prices reflect real-world market data, the transactions occur within the KiddyCash ecosystem to ensure a safe learning experience. Before you begin, ensure you have completed your KYC (Know Your Customer) verification in the app settings to unlock all family features.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Follow these steps to activate the investment module for your child:

  1. Fund the Parent Wallet: Ensure your main KiddyCash wallet has a balance. Most parents in Kenya find it easiest to top up via M-Pesa using our integrated payment gateway.
  2. Navigate to the Kiddy’s Profile: From your dashboard, select the “Family” tab and click on the specific child you wish to set up.
  3. Access the Investment Creation Tool: Click on the Investments tab within their profile. If you are logged into the web portal, you can go directly to the Create Investment Portfolio page to start the wizard.
  4. Set an Investment Allowance: Decide how much of your child’s current KES balance should be available for investing. You can set a one-time seed amount or allow a portion of their weekly allowance to be automatically diverted to their investment sub-account.
  5. Configure Permissions and Transaction Codes: Security is a priority. You can choose to require a Transaction Code for every trade your child makes. This ensures they talk to you before making big “financial” decisions.
  6. Enable Market Access: Toggle the “Simulated Trading” switch to ON. This allows your child to see the list of available stocks and historical price charts.

How it Works for the Family

Once the portfolio is live, your child will see a new “Invest” button in their KiddyCash app. They can browse companies, view performance badges, and use their KES to build their holdings. To better understand the backend mechanics of these trades, we recommend parents read our guide on how investments work for parents.

It is also helpful to sit down with your child and show them how to buy stocks as a kid so they understand the buttons they are clicking.

Monitoring Progress

You can view your child’s portfolio performance at any time from your parent dashboard. You will see which “businesses” they are backing and whether their total portfolio value is increasing. This is a great conversation starter during dinner—discussing why a certain company’s stock might be up or down based on news you hear in the local media.
