How to add a note to a child loan
A loan note is a short message or lesson you attach to a loan you have created for your child inside KiddyCash. It appears alongside the loan details so your child can read why they borrowed the money, what they are expected to learn from it, or any condition you want them to remember — for example, “This KES 500 covers your school trip. Pay it back from your October allowance.”
Adding a note does not change the loan amount, interest, or repayment schedule. It is purely a communication tool between you and your child.
Before you begin
You need an existing loan on your child’s account. If you have not created one yet, follow the guide on how to create a loan for a child first, then come back here.
Steps to add a note to a child loan
-
Open the KiddyCash app and sign in to your parent account. Make sure you are viewing your family dashboard, not a child profile.
-
Go to the Loans section. Tap Family in the bottom navigation bar, then select Loans from the menu. You will see a list of all active and completed loans across your children.
-
Select the loan you want to update. Tap the loan card for the relevant child. This opens the loan detail page. You can also navigate directly to a specific loan by visiting
https://kiddy.cash/family/loans/{loanId}in your browser — replace{loanId}with the actual ID shown in the loan detail URL or in your notification history. -
Tap the “Add Note” button. On the loan detail page, scroll down to the Note section. If no note has been added yet, you will see a prompt that says “Add a lesson or message for your child.” Tap it.
-
Type your note. A text input will appear. Write your message clearly and simply — remember, your child will read this. Keep it short and age-appropriate. For example:
- “You borrowed KES 1,000 for your new football boots. This teaches you how loans work. Pay back KES 200 each month.”
- “M-Pesa sent this to your wallet for school fees. It is not free money — treat it seriously.”
-
Save the note. Tap Save Note. The note is now attached to the loan and will be visible to your child when they view the loan from their own KiddyCash profile.
-
Confirm the note is saved. You will see a confirmation message at the top of the screen. The Note section on the loan detail page will now display your message with a timestamp.
Editing or removing a note
You can update a note at any time by returning to the loan detail page and tapping Edit Note. To remove it entirely, tap Delete Note. Deleting a note does not affect the loan itself.
Tips for writing a good loan note
- Be specific about purpose. Children in Nairobi and across the continent often respond better when they understand exactly what the money is for.
- Connect it to a lesson. KiddyCash is built around financial learning. Use the note to explain concepts like interest, responsibility, or budgeting.
- Keep the tone encouraging, not punishing. A note like “I trust you to pay this back” builds accountability without pressure.
